JIT number provisioning
Just-in-time (JIT) number provisioning allocates a phone number at the moment of customer signup rather than from a pre-allocated pool. For multi-tenant agent platforms, JIT lets each business pick a local-area-code number without warehousing inventory.
Why it matters
A multi-tenant AI agent platform faces a phone-number inventory problem. Each business needs its own number; ideally in their local area code so customers see a familiar number on caller ID. Pre-allocating numbers is wasteful (each unused number still costs the carrier monthly fee). Allocating at signup is the alternative.
JIT provisioning means: at the moment of signup, the platform queries the carrier API for an available number in the requested area code, leases it instantly, and binds it to the new customer. The whole flow takes seconds. The customer sees "your phone number is +1 (470) 555-0100" before they finish the wizard.
The alternative (pre-allocation) wastes capital on unused inventory and limits options at signup; the customer might want a 470 area code but the pool is dry. JIT solves both.
The hard parts:
- Reliable carrier API. Provisioning sometimes fails for opaque reasons; fallback to next-best area code is needed.
- Number portability. If the customer wants to keep this number long-term, the platform handles the carrier-level operational ledger.
- Rate limits. Mass-signup events can exceed the carrier's provisioning rate limits; queueing matters.
How Ajeris handles this
Ajeris's business setup wizard provisions a phone number JIT during the 5-minute setup. The user picks an area code; the agent queries Twilio for an available number in that code, leases it, and confirms with the user. If the area code is unavailable, the agent falls back to the next-best in the user's region.
The number is the user's; if they want to port it to another carrier later, they can. If they want to release it, they can.
